CHAPTER 14
“Whew, I am so glad that’s over,” Cash said as he settled back in the car seat. “Thanks, all of you, for coming with me, but I’m absolutely amazed at the turnout.”
“I think all of us are,” Mike said. “Sure goes to show how strong the sentiment is for our people serving overseas. By the way, Cash, you did great. Your speech was short and to the point. I don’t think you have an egotistical bone in your body, but a lot of people would have made that all about them and how brave they were. Nice job. I’m sure I speak for Kelly as well when I tell you how proud we are of you.”
“Agreed. Cash, I’m curious. What was that all about with Senator Johnson?” Kelly asked.
“I’m curious, too, Cash,” Kendra said.
Cash took a deep breath and then said, “Mom, Mike, it was the weirdest thing ever. I’ve never been one to believe in paranormal stuff or mind reading, but I just may become a believer.”
“What are you talking about, Cash?” Kelly asked.
“When Kendra and I went to dinner Monday evening, we talked about who we were and what we wanted to do in the future. Nothing big, just getting to know one another kind of talk. I made the comment that I might like to retire and run for public office.”
“I remember, Cash. At the time I thought it was a great idea,” Kendra said.
“Really, Mom, Mike, it was kind of one of those things you say, but you never think it could happen. Believe the word for something like that is a pipe dream. I think everyone has one of them from time to time. Anyway, I mentioned it to Kendra when we were casually talking about the future.”
“And today he made that speech about resigning and urging you to run for his office,” Kelly said. “Wow, what a compliment to you.”
“Mom, this is the weirdest thing. When we talked after the ceremony, he told me he’d had his staff do extensive research on me. He’d gotten a copy of my complete military record, knew what honors and decorations I’ve received, where I’d served, even the exact date I’d made the rank of Major.”
“Sounds like he had this in mind before he’d even met you,” Mike said.
“Yes. I mean the guy even knew about the football game we won in high school when I got two touchdowns after Lee Rogers ran the wrong way, and that’s been a while ago. He found out everything about me.”
“I’m assuming he’s serious about you running for his seat,” Kendra said.
“More than serious. He told me he would personally oversee my campaign, give me all of his donor information, have his staff help me, and here’s the kicker. The guy has several million dollars in his campaign fund and he wants to transfer it to me to fund my campaign.”
“Seems to me there are limits on how much money an individual can donate to a campaign,” Mike said.
“I asked him about that, and he said there are a lot of ways to get around it.
